Fair trade. We buy coffee beans in paper directly from the farming families and we pay a bit above the going price. Our farmers are in the mountains at about 1000 metres near Pai, Mae Hong Son, Khun Yuam, Tham Lod, and Chiang Mai. We are a micro-roastery, buying only 1000kgs a year. We sell to exclusive restaurants in Pai, and our product goes out to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, and Khun Yuam. Our beans are locally sourced, and we prefer to buy beans that have had no contact with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Our friendship with the farmers goes back 4 years, and we hope to be in business for generations.
When we bought our land, we merely wanted to farm and have gardens. However, it became much more complicated. We could not access the village water that crossed our driveway, without having a house on the land. We built a very cheap cabin. Still, we were not allowed to hook into the water, because we did not have a toilet. So we built a very cheap toilet, Thai style squatting. That was still not enough, we had to have a kitchen. 2 hours later, we had our kitchen, and we showed photos of grilled cheese sandwiches, with plates and knives and forks. Then we got water.
Now we have built a new cafe, right on the road to Tham Lod, (The Caves) and many tourists and Thais drive past every day.
We deliver to Pai every week, usually on Thursday and Friday. One of our friends in Chiang Mai is fanatical about our coffee and buys about 15 bags a month for his own consumption. A few months ago, he realized that he was nearly out of coffee, and he had forgotten to order. He got on his motorbike and drove to Soppong, bought 15 bags from us, had a visit and turned around, and drove back to Chiang Mai. That's fanaticism!!! Now I send him a reminder when I think he is getting low.
